This 200-by-200-meter square was laid out in a single plan in 1257 and remains one of Europe's largest medieval marketplaces. The hejnał trumpet call from St. Mary's Church tower stops abruptly mid-phrase every hour — a tribute to the trumpeter shot in the throat during a Mongol raid — and the broken melody is broadcast live on national radio every noon. Inside the church, the Veit Stoss altarpiece, carved between 1477 and 1489, is the world's largest Gothic altarpiece. Beneath the square, a museum sits on the medieval street level uncovered during excavations.
