Utrecht Dom Tower

At 112.5 meters it is the Netherlands' tallest church tower; built between 1321 and 1382, 465 steps lead to the top. The tower stands apart from the church not by design: the 1674 tornado collapsed the nave whose buttresses were not yet complete, the rubble was never cleared and rebuilt, and the gap became a square. The city's canals differ from elsewhere too — warehouse wharves and cellars opened at water level in the 13th century and today serve as cafés and terraces.
