Van Gogh Museum

World's largest Van Gogh collection with chronologically arranged works.

Ideal: Ideal for art lovers, museum-goers, Van Gogh fans, and Amsterdam culture routes.

Home to the world's largest Van Gogh collection — about 200 paintings, 500 drawings, and more than 700 letters. The core of the collection belonged to the artist's brother Theo; when Theo died six months later, the works passed to his wife Jo van Gogh-Bonger, who organized exhibitions and published the letters and was the person who truly introduced Van Gogh to the world. The painter sold almost nothing during his lifetime yet produced nearly 2,100 works in his final decade. Works are arranged chronologically, so you can follow his palette step by step from dark tones to yellow.

Why go?

  • To see Van Gogh's most important works and personal story
  • For one of Amsterdam's strongest art museums
  • To understand the artist's color, brushwork, and emotional world up close
