Vianden Castle

Restored feudal castle above the Our River and Victor Hugo's town.

Ideal: Ideal for history, castle visits, town routes, and photography.

It rose between the 11th and 13th centuries and is counted among Europe's largest feudal residences. In 1820 Dutch King William I sold the castle to a local merchant, who dismantled it stone by stone to sell the material and left it in ruins. When the family transferred the remains to the state in 1977, extensive restoration began. Victor Hugo stayed in the town in exile in 1871 and drew the castle; his riverside house is a museum today.

Why go?

  • To see one of Luxembourg's most impressive castle structures
  • To experience medieval atmosphere and historic interiors
  • To build a pleasant route with Vianden town and nature views
