Echternach Bazilikası, Echternach
Echternach, Luxembourg

Echternach Basilica

Oldest town in Luxembourg with UNESCO hopping procession.

Ideal: Good for history, religious heritage, small-town atmosphere, and calm travel.

The monastery was founded in 698 by the English missionary Saint Willibrord, and Echternach is the country's oldest town; the scriptorium here produced important manuscripts in the Middle Ages. The town's real fame comes from the Dancing Procession held every Whit Tuesday: thousands walk from the streets to the basilica hopping in a specific step, and the tradition joined UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage list in 2010. The basilica was blown up during the Battle of the Bulge in 1944 and rebuilt after the war.

Why go?

  • To see one of Luxembourg's oldest religious centers
  • To experience Echternach's historic small-town atmosphere
  • To combine culture and nature on the same route with the Mullerthal region

Travel tip

Plan Echternach together with Mullerthal hiking routes on the same day rather than on its own.
