Neuschwanstein Castle

Ludwig II began construction in 1869, but when he died in 1886 only about 15 of the planned 200 rooms were finished; the king spent a total of 172 nights in his own castle. Despite its medieval appearance, the building was equipped with contemporary technology: running water, toilets on every floor, hot-air heating, and an internal telephone line. Ludwig had it built to escape crowds; it opened to visitors six weeks after his death and today draws 1.4 million people a year. Known as the inspiration for Disney's Sleeping Beauty castle.
