Museum Island

UNESCO-listed cluster of five world-class museums on the Spree.

Ideal: Ideal for museum, history, art, and culture route enthusiasts.

Five museums were placed on the island in the middle of the Spree between 1830 and 1930; the ensemble joined the UNESCO list in 1999. The Ishtar Gate of Babylon in the Pergamon Museum was reassembled on site from glazed bricks dating to 575 BC. The Nefertiti bust in the Neues Museum was found at Amarna in 1912, and Egypt's repatriation claim is still ongoing. Plan ahead knowing the Pergamon building will remain closed for an extended period due to major renovation.

Why go?

  • To see Berlin's most important museum and culture district
  • For rich content spanning antiquities to art collections
  • To walk among historic architecture along the River Spree

Travel tip

Don't try to cover all museums in one day; choosing one or two based on your interests is more rewarding.
