Vyšehrad, Prag
Prague, Czech Republic

Vyšehrad

Historic fortress with Slavín cemetery and quiet Vltava views.

Ideal: Ideal for calm walks, views, history, and a less crowded Prague route.

Legend says Princess Libuše, who foretold Prague's founding, lived here; for Czechs the castle's symbolic weight is considered even older than Prague Castle. The Slavín cemetery inside holds figures such as Dvořák, Smetana, Mucha, and Karel Čapek — for locals this is not a tourist spot but a national pantheon. The 11th-century St. Martin Rotunda is one of the city's oldest surviving structures. The walk atop the walls offers uncrowded views of the Vltava and the city.

Why go?

  • To see a calmer, more local-feeling historic part of Prague
  • To watch the Vltava and city skyline from a different angle
  • To combine park, castle, and history atmosphere on one route

Travel tip

Vyšehrad is a good breather when crowded tourist zones feel overwhelming.
