Český Krumlov

UNESCO town on a Vltava bend with castle and baroque theatre.

Ideal: Ideal for romantic routes, photography, historic towns, and a slower travel pace.

The Vltava curves so sharply around the town in an S that the center is almost a peninsula; the settlement joined the UNESCO list in 1992. The castle is the Czech Republic's second largest and contains a baroque theatre from 1682: stage machinery, painted scenery, and props survive in original form, one of only a few examples of this level still standing worldwide — the stage mechanism is operated a few times a year. A bear has been kept in the castle moat since the 16th century and the tradition continues.

Why go?

  • To see one of the Czech Republic's most beautiful historic towns
  • To experience river bends, castle views, and colorful rooftops
  • To add a romantic, photogenic route outside Prague

Travel tip

The town is small but very popular; explore early to avoid the crowds.
