Provence Lavender Fields
Summer purple fields and stone villages across rural Provence.

Blooming starts around mid-June, peaks in the first half of July, and harvest usually begins around 15 July, so in August you're likely to find empty fields. Those straight purple rows in photos are mostly not true lavender but lavandin, a more productive hybrid. The widest fields are on the Valensole plateau; the small plot in front of Sénanque Abbey, founded in 1148, is the most photographed frame. Stone villages Gordes and Roussillon fit easily into the same route.
