UNESCO sea fortress on six islands, reached by regular ferry.
Ideal: Ideal for history, sea views, and peaceful walks.
Built from 1748 by Sweden as Sveaborg against Russia, it was one of the era's most expensive defence projects spread across six islands; nevertheless it was surrendered to the Russians in 1808 without serious fighting, and that surrender is still debated in Finland. It joined the UNESCO list in 1991. About 800 people live on the islands year-round today, and inmates from the open prison on site work on restoration. The ferry takes a normal public transport ticket.
